
An AI image is a picture of a garment, not a garment: no fabric, no fit, no print method. The factory-side path from concept image to tech pack to sample — including the copyright facts most guides skip.
A growing share of the design briefs arriving at our factory now include AI-generated images — and it is easy to see why: tools like Midjourney and GPT image generation let anyone iterate a hundred hoodie concepts in an evening, work that used to take a designer weeks. What the tools do not tell you is that an AI image is a picture of a garment, not a garment. It has no fabric, no weight, no pattern, no print method — a beautiful surface with nothing underneath. Getting from that image to a box of real garments is a translation job, and translation is exactly what an OEM factory does. Here is the path, honestly mapped.
What the image is missing (and who fills it in)
When we open an AI concept in design review, we are reconstructing everything the model never decided:

None of this is a criticism of AI design — it is a division of labor. The tools are extraordinary at the part of design that is visual exploration; the factory owns the part that is physics. Brands that understand the boundary move fast; brands that email an image and ask "how much?" get back a page of questions.
The print-file reality check
The most common technical surprise, in numbers: garment printing wants roughly 300 DPI at print size, and a typical AI image is 1024-2048 pixels square. Do the division and a 1024 px graphic prints clean at about 3.4 inches — a chest hit, not the oversized back print it looked like on screen. The workflow answer is established: AI upscalers and, for bold designs, vector redrawing (screen printing separations want vectors anyway).
Second surprise: AI images live in luminous screen RGB; fabric and ink live in a smaller gamut. That neon gradient will shift when printed — which is why we sample against Pantone references, not screenshots, and why the print method itself is a design decision (our printing explainer maps which technique preserves which kind of artwork).
Who owns an AI design? The part most guides skip
Three facts every brand should have straight — the first from the US Copyright Office's own guidance and its 2025 report on AI copyrightability:
- Purely AI-generated output is not copyrightable in the US. Human authorship is required; material generated entirely from prompts must be disclaimed in registrations. What is protectable is your human contribution — selection, arrangement, and creative modification of AI output. Practically: the more you rework the concept (composition, redrawn artwork, garment design decisions), the more you own. Note this is the US position; jurisdictions differ.
- Platform terms grant usage, not copyright. As of this writing, Midjourney's paid plans state you own the assets you create to the fullest extent current law allows (with revenue-based plan requirements for larger companies), and OpenAI assigns its interest in outputs to you. Read the current terms yourself before building a brand on them — they are terms of service, and they cannot grant what copyright law does not.
- Clearing the design is still your job. AI models can produce output resembling existing marks and designs; law firms advising brands are unambiguous that responsibility for trademark and design clearance stays with the brand. If the model gives you something that looks like a famous logo's cousin, that risk shipped with the image.
None of this stops AI-designed apparel — it defines how professionals use it: AI for exploration, human decisions layered on top, clearance before production.
The actual path, start to finish
- Send the concept — the AI images plus one paragraph: intended garment, fabric feel, fit language (our fit guides give you the vocabulary), quantity per colorway.
- Design review — after sufficient project details are reviewed, we return the translation: proposed fabric and weight, print/embroidery mapping for the artwork, flagged impossibilities (they exist: four-way gradient dye effects, prints across complex seams) and their nearest producible equivalents.
- Tech pack and artwork prep — measurements, construction, print-ready files (upscaled/vectorized). You can arrive with your own tech pack — AI can even help draft one, within limits — or we build it in development.
- Sample, 10-15 working days — the moment the AI image becomes cloth. Fit, color and decoration lock here; pricing is confirmed after project review.
- Bulk, 20-30 working days — MOQ starts at 50 pieces, with the final minimum depending on the product, fabric, wash, and customization. That small-batch starting point is exactly what our small-batch program exists for.
FAQ
Can you manufacture directly from a Midjourney image? From it, yes — never only from it. The image sets the target; fabric, pattern, print method and measurements have to be decided by humans. That translation is the first thing we do together, and it is quick when the brand knows its intent.
Will the finished garment look exactly like the AI render? It will look like the best physical version of it. Renders ignore fabric drape, print gamut and construction; samples respect them. Brands that treat the render as a mood target are consistently happy; brands expecting a pixel match to a physics-free image are chasing something no factory can print.
Do I own a design I made with AI? You own your human contribution and you have platform usage rights to the raw output — but purely AI-generated material itself is not copyrightable under current US guidance. Rework the design meaningfully, keep records of your creative decisions, and have marks cleared before production.
Is an AI-designed collection taken less seriously by factories? Not here. A well-curated AI moodboard with clear intent beats a vague verbal brief every time. The tools changed who can start a brand; they did not change what a good brief contains.
