The weight bands, and what they're for
The industry brackets denim in three broad bands. The boundaries are conventions, not physics, but they are the conventions every mill and factory quotes in:

The bands describe raw cloth. What most fashion buyers actually order sits narrower: 11-14 oz covers the great majority of washed streetwear jeans, heavy enough to hold a silhouette and take distressing, light enough to wear year-round. Truly heavyweight 16 oz+ denim is a deliberate niche — magnificent in rigid selvedge culture, usually wrong for a washed fashion program, because the stiffness that enthusiasts break in over months is exactly what a fashion customer returns.
Weight decides how the wash reads
Denim's indigo sits on the surface of ring-dyed yarns with a white core, and every wash recipe works by deciding how much of that core to expose. Weight sets the canvas: heavier cloth carries more surface fiber and higher dye-to-core contrast, so it takes stone wash, acid wash and distressing more dramatically — the full chemistry is its own guide. The practical rule runs in both directions. If the design brief is high-contrast vintage fades and hard distressing, spec the upper end of the streetwear band. If it's a soft, subtle, lived-in light wash, a lighter cloth gets there honestly — which is why the same wash recipe is never quoted blind across different base fabrics.
Weight decides whether the silhouette stands
The current streetwear silhouettes — baggy, wide-leg, stacked — are structural fits, and structure comes from the cloth. A wide-leg pattern in a soft 10 oz denim collapses against the leg; the same pattern at 13-14 oz stands away from it, which is the whole look. Slimmer, drapier cuts run the logic in reverse. Stretch complicates the number: elastane-blend denims are usually lighter and behave differently in wash and wear, so a "14 oz look" in a comfort-stretch program is a fabric-development conversation, not a line on a spec.
Weight is a cost line you can read
A pair of jeans consumes roughly a yard and a half of denim, and denim is priced by weight and construction — more ounces is literally more cotton per yard. That is one of the five stacked cost layers in the jeans cost anatomy, and it compounds downstream: heavier garments pull more wash-load capacity and weigh more in the export carton. None of this argues for cutting weight — it argues for choosing it deliberately, because an under-specced jean fails on silhouette and wash, and an over-specced one pays for ounces the design never uses.
How to spec denim weight in a tech pack
Four lines make the weight spec unambiguous:
- State both units — "13 oz/yd² (~440 gsm)" survives every mill conversation on either measurement system.
- Name the weight of the finished garment's fabric, before wash. Washes strip indigo and fiber, and garments relax and shrink; the cloth is specced raw, and the pattern carries the wash allowance so the finished jean lands on measurement — the same logic as shrinkage tolerance on knits.
- Tie the weight to the wash brief. "13 oz, high-contrast stone wash, hard whiskering" is a coherent sentence; the same wash brief on 9.5 oz is a redesign.
- Approve on a washed leg mock or sample, not a swatch. Hand-feel, drape and fade contrast only exist at garment scale.
