Oxford, poplin, twill, chambray, flannel — five names, three weave structures, and most of the confusion in shirt briefs. What each name means physically, the weight bands we quote against, and how each cloth behaves in wash and decoration.

Shirt briefs name fabrics loosely. "Make it in oxford." "Something crisp like poplin." "A heavy flannel, like this photo." Five names — oxford, poplin, twill, chambray, flannel — cover nearly every casual shirt brief we cut, and the confusion between them is really about three weave structures plus one finish. This guide is the fabric layer under our flannel shirt manufacturing guide: what each of the common shirt fabric types actually is, where the weights land, and how each behaves once wash and decoration enter the picture.

Five names, three weaves

Every woven shirting is the same two ingredients — vertical warp yarns interlacing with horizontal weft — and the pattern of which yarn sits on top is most of what you're choosing:

Plain weave alternates over-under on every yarn crossing. It has the most interlacings per square centimeter, which makes the cloth stable, crisp and matte. Poplin and chambray live here.

Basket weave groups yarns so they interlace as a unit. Oxford is the shirting version: a 2×1 basket where two warp ends weave as one over a single, typically heavier weft. Fewer, chunkier crossings give oxford its visible texture and its slightly looser, more forgiving hand.

Twill offsets each row of interlacings by one yarn, producing the diagonal wale you know from denim. Fewer interlacings let the yarns pack denser — so twill reaches heavier weights while draping softer than a plain weave of the same mass, and the broken surface hides creases.

Flannel isn't on the diagram because it isn't a weave — it's a brushing finish applied to twill or plain cloth. More on that below.

Oxford vs poplin: which one does your shirt want?

The short answer: oxford is the textured, casual, forgiving cloth; poplin is the smooth, crisp, lighter one. For a boxy streetwear overshirt, a button-down that should soften with age, or anything headed for a garment wash, start with oxford. For a clean warm-weather shirt or a design that carries fine print detail, start with poplin.

Oxford's 2×1 basket does three useful things. The texture reads casual and hides both wrinkles and minor wear. The chunkier interlacing leaves the cloth a little porous, so it breathes despite a mid-range weight. And it takes garment washing well — oxford is the classic "gets better after ten washes" shirting. Two relatives worth knowing: pinpoint is a finer-yarn, higher-density version of the same basket (smoother, dressier), and royal oxford is a lustrous dress weave that shares little with basic oxford beyond the name.

Poplin is a plain weave in fine yarns, with the weft slightly heavier than the warp — that mismatch produces the fine crosswise rib you can catch in raking light. The result is a smooth, tightly-set face that feels cool, presses crisp, and holds the finest screen or DTG detail of any shirting. The trade: creases show plainly, and at 100-130 gsm the cloth has little of oxford's forgiving drape.

Chambray vs denim: is chambray just lightweight denim?

No — and the difference is the weave, not the yarn. Chambray and denim traditionally share the same yarn recipe: a colored (often indigo) warp crossed with an undyed weft. But chambray is a plain weave, so both faces look alike and the color reads as an even, heathered blue that fades subtly and uniformly. Denim is a warp-faced twill (2/1 or 3/1): diagonal face, lighter back, and a high-low surface that fades preferentially at seams and wear points — the whole mechanism behind denim wash design.

For shirts, that structural difference decides the use case. Chambray breathes and drapes at 120-160 gsm, which is why it works as a true summer shirt. A "denim shirt" is a light twill carrying the denim yarn recipe — it fades like jeans do, with high-low character, and sits naturally in overshirt weights.

Twill and flannel: the soft, heavy end of shirting

Twill shirting is what you spec when the design wants weight without stiffness. Because the diagonal structure packs yarns denser, a 200 gsm twill drapes noticeably softer than a 200 gsm plain weave. That behavior is the engine of most overshirts, work shirts and shackets — and of herringbone, which is simply a twill that reverses its diagonal in stripes.

Flannel is any of these cloths — usually a twill or plain base — run through raising machines that tease fiber ends into a soft nap. The mechanism is the same one that turns loop-back into brushed fleece: the nap traps still air, which is where the warmth comes from. A brushed face also pills more readily than an unbrushed one, so brushing depth is a spec line worth stating rather than luck. Most flannel shirting is yarn-dyed check — the pattern is woven from pre-dyed yarns, not printed — like our boxy oversized flannel or the double-layer thermal build with embroidery.

From our cutting table: yarn-dyed checks cost more than the cloth price suggests, because plaids must be pattern-matched at plackets, pockets and side seams. That means higher fabric consumption and slower sewing than a solid — worth knowing before you spec a large repeat.

What weight should a custom shirt fabric be?

Lighter than most briefs assume: most custom shirting lands between 100 and 260 gsm, with overshirt cloth running to about 320 — far below hoodie-fleece territory. These are the bands we quote against:

One measurement note, mirror-image of the caveat in our fleece guide: for woven shirting, mass per unit area is exactly what ISO 3801 covers (knits fall outside its scope and typically cite EN 12127 or ASTM D3776 instead). Converting American specs, 1 oz/yd² = 33.906 g/m². And as always, a reference garment you like outranks every number in this table — we'd rather weigh your favorite shirt than argue bands in the abstract.

How does weave choice change wash and decoration?

Wash first. Garment washing and enzyme washing want cloth with texture to reveal — oxford, twill and flannel all reward it, and yarn-dyed flannel takes vintage treatments particularly well, like this acid-washed plaid flannel. Poplin is the exception: its value is crispness, and heavy washing spends it. Whatever the weave, wash programs want high cotton content — the cotton fiber-content logic is the same as for tees. And shrinkage tolerances belong in the tech pack before bulk, not in a dispute after it; our shrinkage guide covers the numbers.

Decoration follows the surface. Smooth faces — poplin, fine twill — hold fine screen and DTG detail. Textured oxford and brushed flannel blur fine lines, so they favor embroidery, patches and appliqué, which sit on the surface instead of into it. If the design leans on small type or halftones, that alone can decide the fabric.

How to spec a shirt fabric in one line

"Weave + weight + fiber + finish" — that's the whole grammar. "2×1 oxford, 160 gsm, 100% cotton, garment wash." "Brushed cotton twill flannel, 220 gsm, yarn-dyed check." "Cotton poplin, 115 gsm, no wash." Add a reference garment if you have one; it settles hand-feel questions no spec line can. We quote fabric options at design review and lock the choice on a physical sample in 10-15 working days. Bulk runs 20-30 working days after approval. FAQ

Is oxford or poplin better for streetwear shirts? Usually oxford. Its texture reads casual, hides wrinkles, and improves with garment washing — all of which suit boxy, relaxed silhouettes. Poplin earns its place when the design is clean and print-led: its smooth face carries fine detail that oxford's basket texture would blur.

Is chambray the same fabric as denim? No. They often share the yarn recipe — colored warp, undyed weft — but chambray is a plain weave and denim is a warp-faced twill. Chambray fades evenly and stays light and breathable; denim fades high-low at wear points and reaches heavier weights.

What GSM should an overshirt be? We quote most overshirts and shackets at roughly 240-320 gsm in twill or brushed flannel. Below that band the garment reads as a heavy shirt rather than a layer; above it you're into jacket cloth, and the make (facings, lining decisions) should change accordingly.

Do flannel shirts pill? Yes — more readily than unbrushed cloth, because raising lifts fiber ends and lifted ends are what pills form from. Spec a moderate brushing depth and tighter base cloth for high-wear pieces, and treat deep, plush naps as a hand-feel choice with a durability trade.
