Every hoodie brief we receive eventually asks the same two questions: loop-back or brushed, and how many grams. Both have real answers — but they are physical answers about knit construction and fiber, not the tier-list answers the internet gives. This is the fabric layer underneath our GSM overview: what the two faces actually are, how the weight number is measured, and where the current ultra-heavyweight race stops making sense.

French terry and brushed fleece: one knit, two faces

Hoodie fleece is typically a three-thread fleece knit: a ground yarn forms the face jersey, and a heavier fleece yarn floats across the technical back, tied in by a binding yarn. Everything you buy as "french terry" or "brushed fleece" starts as this same structure — the difference is what happens to that floated back yarn.

French terry (loop-back) leaves the floats as visible loops. The inside shows neat rows of loops; the fabric keeps more structure and drapes with body, which is why dense loop-back is the engine of the structured, boxy silhouettes dominating streetwear — like our dirty-wash boxy french terry pullover.

Brushed fleece runs the same fabric through a raising machine: wire-covered rollers hook the loop fibers and tease them into a soft nap. The nap traps a layer of still air — that is the entire warmth mechanism — and the hand turns plush. The trade: raising works the fibers, so brushing is deliberately limited by the finisher, and a brushed face pills more readily than an intact loop.

Technical detail. Raising machines alternate pile and counter-pile rollers whose angled wire hooks lift fiber ends as the fabric passes under tension; nap depth is a controlled finishing parameter, not a fabric grade. Pilling on the finished fabric is graded by the Martindale method under ISO 12945-2, and finishing genuinely moves the result: a published poly/cotton fleece study took pilling from Grade 1 (severe) to Grade 4 (slight) through singeing and heat-setting. Anti-pill treatment is a spec line you can ask for, not luck.

How the gsm number is actually made

Fabric weight is grams per square meter, measured on conditioned fabric (standard atmosphere, 20 °C / 65% RH per ISO 139) by weighing cut specimens of known area. One precision worth having: the classic mass-per-area standard ISO 3801 covers woven fabrics — for knits like fleece, the applicable methods are ASTM D3776/D3776M or EN 12127. If a mill certificate cites ISO 3801 for a knit, the number is probably fine, but the paperwork is sloppy — worth an eyebrow. Converting American specs: 1 oz/yd² = 33.906 g/m².

Weight is not quality

The number everyone specs is the one that guarantees the least. A mill can hit 450 gsm with short-staple, open-end yarn knitted loosely — heavy on the scale, lifeless in the hand, and aged badly within a year. What actually carries the premium feel is the recipe under the number: yarn type and staple (see our ring-spun guide — the same spinning logic governs fleece), knit density, and finishing. Spec weight and yarn, or you have specced half a fabric.

Blends: what polyester gives and takes

Adding polyester to fleece buys real things: less shrinkage (see our shrinkage guide), better wash durability, lower cost. It also takes: polyester fibers act as anchors that hold pills onto the surface (100% cotton sheds its pills; blends keep them), and polyester does not take the cotton dye routes — which is why garment-dyed and most vintage-wash programs want high-cotton fabric, and why a 50/50 blend acid-washes differently than the reference photo shot on 100% cotton. Blend choice is a wash-program decision as much as a price decision.

How to spec hoodie fleece in one line

FAQ

Is french terry or brushed fleece better for streetwear hoodies? Structure vs softness. Dense loop-back holds the boxy, architectural silhouette and wears cooler; brushed fleece maximizes cozy hand and warmth. The current heavyweight streetwear look is mostly loop-back; classic comfort hoodies are mostly brushed.

What does 500 gsm feel like compared to 400? Noticeably more substantial — the garment stands rather than drapes and the price, weight and drying time all rise with it. Between 400 and 500 is where most premium streetwear briefs actually land once they handle samples.

Do I need 700 gsm to get the structured look? Usually not. Silhouette comes from cut plus fabric density; a well-knit 450-500 gsm loop-back with the right pattern delivers the look most 700 gsm briefs are chasing, at meaningfully lower cost per unit and per shipment.

Why does my blend hoodie pill when my 100% cotton one doesn't? Polyester anchors pills to the surface instead of letting them shed. If the design needs a blend, spec anti-pill finishing and tighter knitting; if the wash program is the priority, stay high-cotton.
