Most streetwear T-shirts run 180-280 GSM, with 220-250 GSM the sweet spot for a structured, boxy fit. Premium heavyweight tees sit at 250-300 GSM. Hoodies and crewnecks range from 350 to 500 GSM; most heavyweight streetwear brands land at 400-450 GSM. Lighter fabric drapes; heavier fabric holds its shape, carries puff print, and costs more per piece. Here is how to choose, from a factory that cuts and sews across this entire range.
What GSM Actually Measures
GSM stands for grams per square meter: the weight of one square meter of fabric. It is the fastest way to communicate fabric substance to a manufacturer because it is objective — "thick" means different things to different people; 240 GSM means the same thing in Los Angeles, London, and Dongguan. If you are used to American specs, ounces per square yard convert at roughly 1 oz/yd² = 34 GSM, so a 7 oz tee is about 240 GSM and a 12 oz hoodie is about 400 GSM.
One thing GSM does not measure is quality. A 300 GSM tee in harsh open-end cotton feels worse than a 220 GSM tee in combed ring-spun cotton. Weight tells you how much fiber is in the fabric, not how good the fiber is or how well the garment is sewn.
GSM Reference Table by Garment Type
The bands below come from our own production experience across this range, not a formal industry standard; treat the borders as gradients rather than walls.

These ranges reflect what we actually run: cotton and cotton-blend jersey, fleece, and french terry across roughly 180-500 GSM, so we see how each band behaves on the cutting table and in the wash.
How GSM Interacts With Fit
This is the part most first-time founders miss: fabric weight and silhouette are one decision, not two.
Oversized and boxy fits want heavier fabric. A boxy 250 GSM tee holds its shoulder line and drops cleanly. Cut the same oversized pattern in 160 GSM jersey and it collapses: the tee reads as "too big" rather than "oversized on purpose." When buyers send us reference photos of structured, drop-shoulder tees and then spec a lightweight fabric to save cost, we flag it, because the sample will not match the photo.
Slim and regular fits tolerate lighter fabric. A fitted 180-200 GSM tee moves with the body and layers easily. Put 300 GSM on a slim pattern and it can feel like cardboard at the elbows.
The same logic applies to fleece: 450 GSM looks architectural on a boxy, drop-shoulder hoodie and restrictive on a slim zip-up.
Shrinkage, Washing, and Why Your Pattern Must Compensate
Cotton shrinks, and knit fabrics shrink more in length than width. Heavier does not automatically mean more stable: a loosely knitted 400 GSM fleece can shrink more than a tightly knitted 220 GSM jersey. What matters is whether the fabric was pre-shrunk (compacted) and how the garment is finished.
Two production realities worth planning for:
- Garment dyeing and vintage washes amplify shrinkage. Stone wash, enzyme wash, sun-fade, and acid wash — treatments we run regularly — put garments through aggressive wet processing, so we cut those styles with extra allowance to land on spec after washing. When you approve a size chart, confirm whether it describes the garment before or after wash.
- Heavy washed styles can carry a higher minimum. Our standard MOQ starts at 50 pieces, but the final minimum depends on the product, fabric, wash, and customization because dye and wash baths need a workable load for consistent results.
Ask your factory for shrinkage test results on the actual fabric lot, and wash your samples at home the way your customers will. A sample that has never seen a washing machine has not finished telling you the truth.
GSM and Print Method: DTG, Screen, and Puff
Fabric weight changes which decoration methods shine (our print methods comparison covers choosing between them in full).
DTG (direct-to-garment) printing performs best on smooth, tightly knitted cotton jersey — typically the 180-300 GSM tee range. DTG ink sits in the fiber, so a clean, flat surface gives crisp detail and photographic gradients. On heavy brushed fleece, raised surface fibers make DTG look soft or faded — possible, but rarely the right tool for a 450 GSM hoodie.
Screen printing works across the entire 180-500 GSM range and is the default for bold streetwear graphics. Heavier fabrics actually help here: a stable, heavy base takes thick ink deposits and high-density effects without rippling.
Puff print — the raised, 3D ink finish that dominates current heavyweight streetwear — genuinely wants heavy fleece. On 380-500 GSM fabric, the thick puff layer cures flat and even. On lightweight jersey, the same deposit can pucker the fabric around the print. If puff print is central to your design language, that is one more argument for a 400 GSM+ hoodie.
Embroidery follows the same rule: heavyweight fleece carries dense chest embroidery beautifully, while a 160 GSM tee needs careful backing and a lighter stitch density to avoid puckering.
We run screen, DTG, puff, heat transfer, and embroidery in-house, and often sample a design on two fabric weights when a buyer is undecided. Seeing the same graphic on 240 and 300 GSM answers the question faster than any spec sheet.
What GSM Does to Your Cost
Fabric is usually the largest cost component in a cut-and-sew garment, and fabric is bought by weight:
- More grams per square meter = more fiber per garment. A 300 GSM tee contains roughly 50% more cotton than a 200 GSM tee of the same size, and the fabric bill scales with it.
- Heavier garments cost more to ship. Air express is billed by weight. An ultra-heavy hoodie can weigh close to a kilogram; across a few hundred units, the freight difference between 350 and 500 GSM is real money. Sea freight softens this, but adds transit time.
- Heavier knits can run slower. Thick fleece is harder on cutting and sewing — hood joins and pocket bags need more attention, which shows up in the labor portion of your quote.
None of this means heavy is wrong — it means heavy should be a positioning decision. A 450 GSM hoodie at a premium retail price makes sense. A 450 GSM hoodie forced into a mid-market price point squeezes your margin from both ends.
When Heavier Is NOT Better
Buyers often ask us for 450-500 GSM because a brand they admire uses it. Sometimes that is exactly right. Often it is not, and an honest factory should say so. Heavier is the wrong call when:
- Your customers live in warm climates. A 300 GSM tee in a Florida or Southeast Asian summer stays in the closet. Weight that never gets worn builds no brand loyalty.
- Your silhouette is slim or athletic. Heavy fabric on a close-fitting pattern restricts movement and reads stiff, not premium.
- Your graphics are DTG-based photo prints. Mid-weight, smooth jersey will present the artwork better than the heaviest fleece ever could.
- Your logistics are air-freight DTC. Every extra 100 GSM travels with every order you ship, forever.
- You are chasing weight instead of construction. A 240 GSM tee with clean shoulder seams, proper rib collar, and consistent stitching outperforms a heavier tee that is poorly made. Weight is visible on a spec sheet; quality is visible in the seams.
The honest sweet spots — around 220-250 GSM for tees and 400-450 GSM for hoodies — are popular precisely because they deliver the structured streetwear look while staying wearable and financially sane.

What GSM is considered a heavyweight T-shirt? In streetwear, anything from roughly 240 GSM up reads as heavyweight, and 250-300 GSM is the premium heavyweight band. A typical mass-market tee is 150-180 GSM. Above 300 GSM, tees start behaving more like light sweatshirts.
Is 400 GSM good for a hoodie? Yes — 400 GSM is the benchmark heavyweight hoodie weight, and the 380-450 GSM band is where most premium streetwear hoodies sit. It holds a boxy silhouette, takes puff print and embroidery well, and still works as everyday outerwear in most Western climates. Go to 450-500 GSM only if you want a rigid, sculptural piece.
Does higher GSM mean better quality? No. GSM measures weight, not quality. Yarn type (combed ring-spun versus open-end), knit tightness, pre-shrinking, and sewing standards all matter as much or more. Use GSM to set the feel and structure you want, then judge quality from physical samples.
How much does GSM affect the price of a garment? Meaningfully, because fabric is the biggest cost driver in cut-and-sew production and is purchased by weight. Moving a tee from 200 to 300 GSM raises the fiber content by half, and heavier garments also cost more to ship, especially by air. Expect a clear per-piece difference between weight bands.
