The short answer: stone wash is abrasion, acid wash is bleach — and neither involves acid. A stone wash tumbles wet garments with pumice stones that physically scrub color off the surface, producing an even, lived-in fade with natural contrast at seams and edges. An acid wash tumbles dry or barely-damp garments with pumice soaked in a bleaching agent, so color is stripped only where a stone touches — producing the high-contrast marble. Same stones, different job.

Both run in-house here, on denim and on fleece and jersey, which is exactly why this comparison is worth making properly: most of what's written about it covers only jeans, while half the demand we see is for hoodies and tees. The name confusion is historical: "acid wash" stuck because the 1980s effect looked chemically violent. The chemistry is bleach oxidation, not acid — and on denim specifically, both washes work because indigo sits on the surface of ring-dyed yarn, so removing a little surface color exposes the pale core.

What each wash demands from the fabric

Stone washing is physically aggressive, so it wants substance. On fleece that means the heavyweight 350-500 gsm band; a light 180-200 gsm jersey tee risks thinning and tearing in a stone load, which is why we steer light fabrics to enzyme washing instead — the three-way finish comparison covers that fork in detail. On denim the same logic runs through fabric weight: heavier cloth carries more surface fiber and higher dye-to-core contrast, so it takes both washes more dramatically.

Fiber content matters equally for both. Cotton abrades and bleaches beautifully; polyester resists both. On cotton-poly blends either wash reads noticeably more subtle — a fact to decide with your eyes on a sample, not discover in bulk.

Choosing between them

Price the difference honestly: it's smaller than the look difference. The real decision is aesthetic:

  • Choose stone wash when the garment should feel like it has history — softened, evenly faded, wearable with anything. It's the quieter, more versatile finish, and the one that flatters classic fits.
  • Choose acid wash when the finish is the statement. The marble is loud by design, strongest on black and other dark bases, and every piece comes out unique — brands that lean into that make it a selling point on the product page.
  • Uniform inventory? Then reconsider both. Washed finishes vary by nature; if every unit must match the product photo exactly, garment dye or an unwashed program is the honest answer.

Both are batch processes: the stones need garments to work against, so MOQ starts at 50 pieces, with the final minimum depending on the product, fabric, wash, and customization — confirmed at design review. And for either wash, the sample is where the tone gets locked, because stone and bleach effects can only be judged on a physical garment.

One more spec note from the floor: both washes shrink garments, so washed programs are cut from wash-adjusted patterns — shrinkage tolerance belongs in the tech pack whichever drum your garment goes into.

Is stone wash the same as acid wash? The "acid" name is a 1980s artifact that stuck because the effect looks chemically dramatic.

Which works better on t-shirts and hoodies? Both translate from denim to knits, with one caveat: stone washing wants heavyweight fabric — 350-500 gsm fleece takes stones well, while light jersey tees risk damage and usually get an enzyme wash instead. Acid wash reads strongest on black and dark bases, on fleece and jersey alike.
