Ring-Spun vs Open-End Cotton: The Yarn Decision Hiding Inside Every T-Shirt
Ring-spun, open-end, combed and carded describe different decisions. Learn how to separate the terms, compare actual jersey and write a quote-ready yarn specification.

“100% combed ring-spun cotton, 30/1 jersey” is not one quality badge. It is a stack of separate specifications: cotton names the fiber, combed names an extra fiber-preparation step, ring-spun names the spinning route, 30/1 names yarn count and ply, and jersey names the knit. A quote can change when any one of those lines changes.
That distinction is the useful answer to ring-spun vs open-end cotton and combed vs carded cotton. Ring versus open-end compares how prepared fibers become yarn. Combed versus carded compares how the fiber feed was prepared before spinning. They influence the finished cloth, but neither term proves the weight, softness, pilling result, print quality or durability of a T-shirt by itself.
The four labels buyers often collapse into one

All cotton intended for these conventional yarn routes is opened, cleaned and carded. Combing is an additional step after carding, not the opposite of carding. Cotton Incorporated’s CottonWorks training explains that the comber removes a selected portion of short fibers and further straightens the retained fiber feed. The precise removal depends on the cotton and process settings, so “combed” is not a fixed percentage or a universal performance grade.
The terms can therefore cross. A mill can make carded ring-spun yarn or combed ring-spun yarn; the preparation and spinning lines must both be stated. In everyday T-shirt sourcing, “carded open-end” and “combed ring-spun” are common packages, but common pairings are not definitions.
Ring-spun vs open-end: what actually changes
In ring spinning, prepared roving is drafted, twisted by the spindle and ring-traveller system, and wound onto a bobbin before a separate winding stage. In rotor spinning, also called open-end spinning, opened fibers enter a rotating rotor and join the open yarn end before the yarn is withdrawn and wound. CottonWorks identifies the extra roving and winding steps and the slower production route as reasons ring-spun yarn generally costs more to make than rotor yarn.
Those mechanics often create a recognizable sourcing direction:

“Often” matters. Fiber length, blend, yarn count, twist, knitting, dyeing, finishing and fabric mass all influence what a buyer finally touches. A heavy ring-spun jersey and a light rotor jersey are not a controlled comparison. Neither are two supplier swatches with different finishes.
The purchasing question is not “Which spinning system wins?” It is: Which identified fabric produces the surface, hand, decoration and after-care result this style needs at its target cost?
Combed vs carded cotton: keep the preparation axis separate
Carding opens and separates fiber, removes some impurities and forms a continuous sliver for later processing. Combing takes prepared fiber further: it removes a selected short-fiber fraction and improves alignment before the next spinning stages. CottonWorks notes that combing can support finer yarn counts and can contribute to sheen, drape, hand and durability, while also making clear that the need for combing depends on the product and performance target.
That gives a buyer a defensible comparison:
- Carded cotton yarn can be appropriate when a more textured surface, bulk or lower material cost fits the brief.
- Combed cotton yarn is a candidate when a cleaner surface and finer yarn direction matter enough to justify the extra preparation.
- Neither label approves the garment. The exact yarn and finished jersey still need a physical comparison under the intended dye, finish and decoration route.
Do not infer fiber content from the preparation term. “Combed cotton” can still be 100% cotton; combing changes the prepared fiber population, not cotton into another fiber. The declared composition remains its own label and verification question.
How to compare two T-shirt fabrics without rigging the result
First make the samples comparable. Record composition, yarn-preparation claim, spinning route, yarn count and ply, knit construction, target mass per unit area, finish, color and supplier article. Then review both fabrics in the state in which the garment will be approved.
Use a short evidence set:
- Face and back close-ups. Photograph the same area, scale and light so surface differences are reviewable rather than implied by mood-board images.
- Hand and drape on the intended pattern. A loose swatch cannot settle how a boxy body or long sleeve hangs. A 230 GSM boxy tee, a 280 GSM long-sleeve tee and an acid-washed oversized tee ask different things of a cotton jersey.
- Decoration trial. Print or embroider the actual artwork at intended size and coverage. Judge edge definition, penetration, hand, distortion and appearance after the agreed care trial instead of declaring one yarn route “better for printing” in every process.
- After-care comparison. Identify the wash/dry procedure, measurement points and review interval. Record dimensional change, spirality, surface appearance and color in the same way for both candidates.
- Retained reference. Keep the approved fabric or garment with its supplier article, lot where applicable, color, finish and revision. The phrase “same ring-spun cotton” is not enough to control a reorder.
What to write in a tech pack or RFQ
Avoid a floating line such as “premium ring-spun cotton.” A useful request identifies both the chosen attributes and the attributes still open for supplier proposals.
Body fabric: 100% cotton; combed ring-spun yarn requested; single jersey; supplier to state yarn count/ply; target finished GSM and tolerance per project specification; color/finish per named reference; submit identified fabric and decorated sample for approval. No substitution of preparation, spinning route, yarn count, composition or finish without written comparison and approval.
If carded or rotor yarn is acceptable, say so. If either route can be proposed, ask the supplier to identify each option rather than hiding the difference behind two prices. Record:
- supplier and fabric article code;
- declared composition;
- carded or combed preparation;
- ring or rotor/open-end spinning route;
- yarn count system, value and ply, such as
Ne 30/1; - knit construction and finished target GSM;
- color and finish state;
- approved swatch, garment sample and decoration-trial IDs;
- substitution and reopen rule.
English cotton count is indirect: a higher Ne number denotes a finer yarn, but it does not set fabric weight on its own. Ply also needs its denominator: 30/1 is a single yarn and 30/2 identifies two plies in the CottonWorks notation. Pair the yarn line with the knit and finished GSM rather than publishing a universal “best count” for premium tees.
Five approval mistakes to reject
- “Ring-spun means combed.” It does not; spinning route and preparation are separate.
- “Open-end means recycled or fake cotton.” It does not; rotor spinning is a yarn-making route, not a fiber-content claim.
- “Combed always feels softer.” It can support a cleaner, finer direction, but the finished comparison still includes count, knit and finish.
- “This sample proves the bulk lot.” A development sample controls a reference; incoming production material still needs the agreed comparison and lot-specific checks.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is ring-spun cotton the same as combed cotton? No. Ring-spun names the spinning system. Combed names an additional fiber-preparation step after carding. A complete yarn description states both when both matter.
What is carded ring-spun cotton? It is cotton that was carded but not put through the additional combing stage before the ring-spinning preparation and spinning route. It is a valid specification, not a contradiction.
Is open-end cotton lower quality? “Lower quality” is too broad to approve or reject a fabric. Rotor yarn can be a sensible cost and surface choice. Compare identified finished fabrics against the garment’s hand, appearance, decoration and care criteria.
Can I identify combed cotton by touch? You can compare the hand and surface of two controlled samples, but touch alone does not verify the supplier’s preparation claim. Ask for the yarn specification and retain the approved material reference.
Does ring-spun cotton always print better? No universal result follows from the yarn label. Run the intended artwork, process, pretreatment or cure route on the proposed finished fabric, then inspect the result before and after the agreed care trial.
What should a factory quote if I do not know the yarn count? Provide composition, target GSM, knit, hand/appearance direction and a physical benchmark. Ask the factory or fabric supplier to identify the proposed yarn preparation, spinning route, count and ply so the option can be compared and recorded before approval.
Ring-spun, rotor, carded and combed are useful words only when they identify a material.
