
Ring-spun, combed, 30 singles — the words on premium blanks describe real spinning engineering. What each one actually buys, what the marketing gets wrong, and what to write in a tech pack.
"100% ring-spun combed cotton, 30 singles" — the spec line on every premium blank reads like an incantation, and most brands repeat it without knowing which words earn their price. Each one describes a real engineering decision made at the spinning mill, months before your tee exists. Understanding them lets you spec fabric like a buyer instead of quoting a label. This is the yarn layer underneath our fiber-content guide; same discipline, one step earlier in the chain.
Two machines, two different yarns
Ring spinning drafts cotton into a fine strand and twists it continuously via a ring and traveller. The result: fibers lying parallel and well-aligned along the yarn axis — a smooth, strong, even yarn, produced relatively slowly.
Open-end (rotor) spinning skips steps: fibers are separated and flung into a high-speed rotor that assembles them into yarn directly, combining spinning and winding. It runs many times faster and cheaper — and produces a bulkier yarn with more disordered, folded fibers bound by wrapper fibers.
Neither is "fake cotton." They are different tools: open-end owns the coarse, economical end of the market (budget tees, fleece); ring spinning owns everything where hand and fineness matter.
Technical detail. The measured differences line up cleanly in a table; fiber alignment is the mechanism behind almost every row.

The economics are real, which is why open-end dominates where fineness is not required.
What ring-spun buys in a finished tee
- Hand and drape. Aligned fibers make a smoother, softer surface — the difference you feel immediately between a budget promo tee and a retail blank at the same weight.
- A better print surface. On smooth ring-spun jersey, ink sits on top of the fabric and edges stay crisp; on rougher carded open-end surfaces, ink sinks between fibers and fine detail fuzzes. - Strength and evenness at the same weight — fewer thin places and neps, which reads as quality over months of wear (a yarn-level result; garment-level durability also depends on knitting and finishing).
The honest part: what ring-spun does not mean
Two claims you will read on a hundred blanks pages deserve correction. First, "ring-spun is less hairy" — measured hairiness data often shows the opposite, because rotor yarn's wrapper fibers bind its surface down. Second, "open-end always pills more" — pilling depends on staple length, count, blend and finishing as much as spinning system, and at least one matched study found rotor-spun knits pilled less in poly/cotton blends. Ring-spun's genuine advantages are hand, alignment, evenness and printability — buy it for those, not for a myth.
Combed, counts and plies — the rest of the spec line
Combed means the yarn passed through an extra process that extracts short fibers and neps before spinning (the removed waste, called noil, is significant — which is why combing costs money). What remains spins smoother and stronger. "Combed ring-spun" is the standard premium tee recipe for a reason.
Count (Ne) is an indirect fineness measure — higher number, finer yarn. Budget tees commonly run 18-20s; the mainstream quality tier runs 30s; 40s and up is fine, lightweight territory. Singles vs plied: "30/1" is a single 30s yarn; "30/2" plies two together with opposite twist — stronger, more even, more expensive. Most tees are singles; plying appears where durability or surface perfection justifies it.
Staple length sits underneath it all: everyday upland cotton (about 1-1¼ inch staple) spins the counts above comfortably; long-staple cottons exist for finer, stronger yarns at a premium — relevant if you ever chase a 40s+ luxury tee.
What to write in your tech pack
For a standard premium streetwear tee: "100% cotton, combed ring-spun, 30s, jersey, [target gsm]" — five words that lock the yarn tier unambiguously. For heavyweight boxy builds where density does the talking, 20s-26s counts are normal and honest. Where open-end is acceptable (underlayers, budget lines, some fleece bodies), accept it knowingly and take the savings — the sin is paying ring-spun prices for open-end yarn, which is exactly what an unspecified "100% cotton" line permits. A heavyweight oversized boxy tee and a promo giveaway can both truthfully say "100% cotton"; the yarn line is where they part ways.

Is ring-spun cotton worth the extra cost for a streetwear tee? For anything customer-facing with graphics: almost always. The hand difference is immediate and the print surface is measurably better. Skip it only on lines where price is the entire proposition.
What does "30 singles" mean on a blank? A single (unplied) yarn of English count Ne 30 — the mainstream quality tier for tee jersey. Higher numbers are finer yarns and lighter fabrics; heavyweight tees deliberately use coarser counts knit densely.
Combed or carded — how do I tell in hand? Combed feels cleaner and smoother with fewer tiny slubs and surface neps; carded has more texture. On press, combed shows its worth in fine-line print detail. If two swatches feel different at the same claimed spec, ask for the yarn line in writing.
Does open-end cotton pill more? Not reliably — that is the myth. Pilling tracks staple, count, blend and finishing more than spinning system, and measured studies cut both ways. If pilling is a concern, discuss anti-pilling finishing and fiber choice rather than assuming the spinning route settles it.
