Ask a buyer what a hoodie is and you get one word. Ask our cutting room and you get a stack: hood panels and their lining, front and back bodies, sleeves, a pocket and its facings, rib for the cuffs and hem, a drawcord, two eyelets, a zipper if the style opens, and a small pile of labels. A standard pullover works out to roughly twenty pattern pieces before a single seam is sewn. This guide names the parts of a hoodie the way a factory names them, then walks the production sequence that assembles the stack — because the order of operations is as much a part of the product as the fabric. The hood: three pieces pretending to be one

The hood is the component buyers look at last and factories engineer first, because it is a small three-dimensional garment of its own. A common construction uses two side panels joined by a center seam; a three-panel hood adds a center gusset strip between them, which deepens the hood and moves the seams off the crown. The inside is a choice, not an afterthought: self-lined (the shell fabric doubled, the default on heavyweight fleece), contrast-lined (jersey or mesh, often used as a color moment), or unlined with a clean-finished edge on lighter styles.

Where the hood meets the front neck, many pullovers use a crossover — the two front hood edges overlap at the center instead of meeting edge to edge. It stabilizes the neckline and frames the face when the hood is down; whether you want it is a style call the tech pack should state either way.

Then the hardware. The drawcord exits through two eyelets — either metal grommets or stitched (embroidered) eyelets, which read cleaner on minimal designs and remove metal from the garment. Drawcords themselves are specced flat or round, with tipping at the ends: metal tips, silicone, or a simple heat-seal.

One rule overrides styling: children's sizes drop hood drawcords entirely, and the numbers behind it are grim. The US CPSC logged 56 hood-and-neck drawstring entanglements between 1985 and 2011, 18 of them fatal — so ASTM F1816-97 removed hood drawstrings from children's sizes 2T-12 outright, CPSC rule 16 CFR 1120 has treated non-compliance as a substantial product hazard since 2011, and the EU's EN 14682 restricts cords on children's clothing up to age 14, strictest for under-7s. After the standard took hold, reported fatalities fell roughly 75%. For a factory the consequence is simple: a youth run of an adult style is a pattern change, not a size change.

Body and pocket: where the design actually lives

The body is a front panel and back panel joined at the shoulders and sides — the same skeleton as a tee, in heavier fabric. On a pullover, the signature component is the kangaroo pocket (pouch pocket): a single patch with two angled hand openings, set onto the front panel and topstitched. The stress points at each opening corner take a bartack — a dense reinforcing stitch — because a pocket that will carry phones and fists for years fails at its corners first. Zip-up styles split the pouch into two split pockets, one per front panel, and premium briefs sometimes swap in welt or zippered pockets, each of which adds pattern pieces and operations.

This is also the panel where decoration happens. Chest prints, back prints and embroidery are almost always applied to the cut panel before assembly, flat, when the machine can register the artwork precisely — one of the quiet reasons factories ask for artwork placement relative to pattern landmarks rather than eyeballed mockups. Sleeves and shoulders: the silhouette levers

Hoodie sleeves come set-in, raglan, or — the current streetwear default — drop shoulder, where the shoulder seam lands on the upper arm. Which one your style uses changes the pattern, the sewing order and the fit vocabulary; that vocabulary (oversized, boxy, cropped, and what drop shoulder actually specifies) is covered in our hoodie fits and construction guide. The pattern-making terms — armscye, sleeve cap, high point shoulder — carry over unchanged from the tee anatomy.

Ribbing and trims: the stretch frame

Cuffs and the bottom hem band are cut from rib knit — usually 1x1 or 2x2 rib with a few percent spandex — because rib stretches and recovers where the body fabric shouldn't have to. Rib height is a spec line, not a default: a 5 cm cuff and a 7 cm cuff photograph like different garments. On zip-ups, add the zipper itself (coil, molded plastic, or metal teeth), its slider and puller, and optionally a zipper garage — a small fabric hood at the top stop that keeps metal off the chin.

The rest of the trim list is small but never optional: main label, size label, care label, and increasingly a woven herringbone tape covering the back neck seam. Each is a sourcing line with its own lead time, which is why "just a plain hoodie" briefs still generate a trim sheet.

The fabric layer, briefly

Nearly every hoodie is cut from knit fleece — loop-back (french terry) or brushed on the inside — most commonly in cotton or a cotton-poly blend. (For a concrete reference point: the blank-market staple Gildan 18500 runs a 50/50 blend at 8.0 oz/yd² — about 271 gsm.) Fabric choice and weight do more to position the garment than any component above: the same pattern in 300 gsm and 450 gsm produces two different products. How a hoodie is made: the production sequence

Components explain what a hoodie is; the sequence explains what you are paying for. This is the path a bulk order takes through our floor in Humen, after the sample is approved and fabric is in house.

  1. Fabric inspection and relaxing. We check rolls against the approved lot for shade and defects, then open them and let the fabric relax before cutting — knits are stretched on the roll, and panels cut from unrested fabric can shrink off-spec before they ever reach a sewing machine (the fiber science is in our shrinkage tolerance guide).
  2. Spreading and cutting. Fabric is spread in layers on the cutting table to form a lay, and a marker — the jigsaw arrangement of every pattern piece across the fabric width — is cut through the stack. Marker efficiency decides how much of the roll ends up in garments instead of scrap; trade benchmarks treat 80-85% and above as good cutting-room performance, and that gap is one concrete reason quotes differ between factories. Cut panels are bundled by size and fabric lot, so that one garment is never sewn from two dye lots.
  3. Panel decoration. Bundles that need printing or embroidery detour to the decoration line while still flat, then return. Doing this mid-process, panel by panel, is what makes placement repeatable across hundreds of pieces.
  4. Small parts first. Parallel stations build the sub-assemblies: hood panels joined and lined, eyelets set, pocket openings hemmed and pressed, cuffs and hem band closed into rings. A hoodie line is really several short lines feeding one long one.
  5. Assembly. The main line joins shoulders (with back neck tape or taping as specced), sets the sleeves, closes sleeve and side seams in one run, attaches cuffs and hem band, and finally sets the finished hood into the neckline — the highest-skill operation on the garment, where lining, crossover and neck seam all meet.   6. Wash or finish, if the program calls for it. Most hoodies go straight to pressing; washed programs — stone wash, acid wash, garment dye — route through the wash house as whole garments and come back changed in hand-feel and shade.
  7. Quality control and packing. Inline checks during sewing, then a final inspection against the agreed AQL plan: measurements audited against the size spec, seams and bartacks checked, metal detection where the market requires it. We press, fold, polybag and pack to the carton spec.

What the vocabulary buys you

A brief written in component language — three-panel self-lined hood, stitched eyelets, flat drawcord with silicone tips, 2x2 rib, split pockets, dropped shoulder — gets sampled right far more often than a mood board, because every phrase in it maps to a pattern piece or an operation the factory can price and repeat. That translation is what a tech pack does, and it is the conversation we have in design review every week.
